Evan Carlinsmith, (previousley Evan Smith) is an Illustrator working mostly from an analogue, hand rendered mixed media style, integrated with digital image making and editing as a creative tool. Open to experimentation.
Inspired by folklore, religion and the way illustration, painting and drawing can be a vehicle for conveying important messages, supporting and promoting social issues and work as a creative catalist for change. I am interested in visual storytelling, symbolism, character illustration following the stylistic principle of simplicity and exaggeration. Looking to be part of the movement for inclusive positive representation of our diverse world, through illustration, children picture books and other visual communication media. With a focus on LGBTQ+ representation in character design and the use of colour as visual symbolism. I have a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design from Northbrook College Sussex (2006), a BA Hons Graphic Design Degree from The University for the Creative Arts, Epsom (2009) and a Masters in Illustration from Falmouth University(2025)
I continue to grow and explore my creative work through my personal creative practice, working out what it means to be a Queer artist with a Catholic faith, while balancing the necessities of life with my other creative skill in hairdressing and working on varied illlustration projects. Lives a craft and creative life in Sutton with Husband.
